The Department of Companion Animals, Atlantic Veterinary College, is seeking applications from qualified individuals for a full-time registered animal health technician (RVT). The successful applicant will provide technical, physical, and administrative services to support the laboratory teaching program in the Companion Animal Clinical Skills Center and Companion Animal departmental research.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
 

  • Support the teaching activities of faculty members in the Department of Companion Animals
  • Provide technical support in the form of lab preparation and technical assistance during and after the laboratory sessions for preclinical, clinical and graduate veterinary medicine courses
  • Monitor, advise and assist veterinary students who are participating in companion animal laboratories
  • Maintain supplies and ensure proper equipment maintenance within the Clinical Skills Center as required, including maintaining developing and sourcing teaching models to enhance or refine the use of live animals
  • Provide technical and administrative support for the volunteer teaching animal program
  • Monitor teaching animal health and welfare and bring concerns to the Chair of the Companion Animal Department and the University Veterinarian
  • Provide medical treatment for teaching animals as prescribed by a veterinarian. This includes veterinary procedures commonly practiced by AHTs including but not limited to administration of medications and vaccines, collecting blood samples, removing and applying bandages, placement of IV catheters.
  • Provide or oversee the general husbandry needs of the teaching animals, with support from Animal Resources staff
  • Follow appropriate Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) protocols and notify Infection control officer or technician of any potential issues
  • Provide technical and administrative support for departmental research
  • Other duties as required

QUALIFICATIONS: 
 

  • Be a graduate of an AHT program from a recognized school with RVT designation
  • Have a minimum of 3 years of current experience with companion animals; this must include experience with anesthesia and surgical principles
  • Have excellent oral communication skills
  • Be able to work effectively as part of a team including students, staff and faculty
  • Have excellent organization and time management skills
  • Be a creative and forward-thinking individual with a dedication to excellence in teaching (development of models, organization of teaching materials)
  • Have basic computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Be self-motivated and able to work independently in a versatile work environment

  • Familiarity with the academic / curricular programs, policies & procedures at the Atlantic Veterinary College
  • Familiarity with the university environment and university policies & procedures
